Duke: Full Custody Awarded After Ex-Partner Took Him

Duke is a sweet senior adored by his mom. But when her relationship with her boyfriend ended, things took a heartbreaking turn.   

Her ex-boyfriend took Duke, claiming he had as much right to the dog as she did. She turned to Boston Dog Lawyers for help.  

At first, we tried to be reasonable, avoid conflict and perhaps come to a custody-sharing agreement, ensuring Duke’s happiness above all. But her ex was uncooperative and threatening, stating she would never see Duke again.  

Attorney Jeremy Cohen  focused mediation efforts on proving that our client was not only Duke’s rightful owner but also the best caregiver for him due to her experience caring for older dogs.   

In the end, our client was awarded full custody of Duke. It was a tremendous victory, not just for her but for Duke, who could now return to the stable, loving home he deserved.   

While the win was deeply rewarding, we couldn’t help but reflect on how different things could have been if our client’s ex had been willing to approach the situation with compassion and reason.  

The most rewarding moment came a few days later when Duke’s mom arrived at the Boston Dog Lawyers office to pick up Duke. The moment Duke saw her, he ran straight to her, tail wagging furiously, and covered her face in joyful kisses. It was a tearful reunion that left everyone in the room smiling.
