Boston Dog Lawyers founder Jeremy Cohen was recently featured in the Jewish Journal of Greater Boston. The piece traces his journey from a 2008 selectmen's hearing that changed everything, to landmark pet custody rulings, to the passage of Ollie's Law — and the philosophy behind the firm he built.

Writer Ethan M. Forman sat down with Attorney Jeremy Cohen to talk about how a single hearing in a Marblehead selectmen's board room — one involving his own stepchildren's dog — turned into a decades-long legal mission.

What the Story Covers

The Jewish Journal piece traces the arc of how Boston Dog Lawyers came to be — from Jeremy's chance attendance at a dangerous dog hearing in 2008, to arguing a landmark pet custody case before the Massachusetts Appeals Court, to being present when Governor Maura Healey signed Ollie's Law in 2024.

The article also includes the voice of a real client: Dave Finstein of Framingham, whose 22-month fight to get his Maine coon cat Waffles back is a case that captures exactly why this work matters. As Dave put it simply: “There is no one else to call. He is that good.”

Why This Kind of Recognition Matters

For most of our clients, the calls they make to us aren't just legal inquiries — they're desperate reaches for help during some of the hardest moments of their lives. A pet facing destruction. A beloved animal lost to someone else's negligence. A companion kept away during a painful breakup.

What we've always known — and what this article puts plainly into words — is that the law hasn't always caught up to the reality of how deeply people love their animals. Boston Dog Lawyers exists to bridge that gap.

Jeremy has said many times that walking in a client's shoes means understanding the grief of losing a pet. Having loved and lost his own golden retriever, Maisey, that understanding is real — not rhetorical.
