Yesterday, Boston Dog Lawyers founder Jeremy Cohen posted this on LinkedIn on his way to court:

"Today is Bentley's trial. We're ready. I have the best of the best experts with me, and we're all ready to go to the mat for Bentley. It's been over one thousand days since Bentley's only incident, and the town of Millis just won't quit in their demand to euthanize him despite all the precautions his owner put in place to ensure it never happened again. We're going to save him."

The Case, Briefly

Bentley, a Cane Corso, bit a neighbor in Millis three years ago — a single incident. The victim herself testified she didn't want the dog euthanized. His owner Rebecca Martin has taken every recommended safety measure since. There have been no further incidents in over 1,000 days.

The Town of Millis has sought euthanasia anyway. After multiple appeals, the case is now before a judge.

What's at Stake

Cases like Bentley's are a reminder of how much power local authorities have over a dog's life — and how quickly a single incident can set an irreversible process in motion, even when the victim opposes the outcome.

Attorney Cohen and his team were in court today with expert witnesses ready to testify. We'll have more as the proceedings develop.

If Your Dog Is Facing a Hearing

Don't wait to see how it goes. The first hearing is often the most consequential one.
